Studio 16
Francis Russo - Guitar Maker
Building his first guitars as a teenager, Francis has now been making, playing and studying guitars for over 20 years. Having formal studies in design, woodcraft, sculpture and fine art as well as many years industry experience as a multidisciplinary designer-maker, Francis’ instruments are the culmination of lived experience and bring a fresh approach to the art of luthiery.
Focusing mostly on acoustic guitar making, the studio operates primarily with hand tools, with the machining and milling of local timbers done at a separate location. The tools utilised are wide ranging, from Francis’ great grandfather’s old splitting wedge to finely honed hand planes and carving tools and the blow-torch heated side bending iron welded from an old tow bar.
